-CHAPTER

FOURTEEN-

WHAT WAS THE protocol for dating someone who lived across the hall from you? Lettie wasn’t sure. Did she knock on Chandler’s door? Wait for Chandler to knock on hers? Meet her in the lobby? At the bar?

Okay, maybe she was a little uptight. The realization didn’t answer any of her questions. A knock on the front door made her heart skip a beat.

But when she made it to the living room, it was only her brother standing there. “I was working on the cabins, and Daphne said y’all were going out.”

“Does it get weird? You know, drinking where you work?”

“It’s a small town. And I’m cutting back on shifts. I like the carpentry.” Lorne grinned, his shaggy blonde hair falling into his eyes. “I thought I would walk you ladies over. I was going in that direction, anyway.”

Lorne seemed happy, there was a sparkle in his eyes Lettie rarely saw. Maybe working with the contractor and being part of the Lodge again would do him some good, give him a purpose. He’d learned to work with wood from their grandfather, and he’d always excelled at it. He used to whittle Lettie gifts when they were kids. She still had a box of tiny wooden animals tucked away under her bed.

“You can walk me.” Daphne dramatically fluttered her lashes at him. “Since your sister thinks we’re in love.”

Lorne’s cheeks turned red. “What?”

“I didn’t say that,” Lettie said and Daphne burst into laughter.

“Come on, Lorne.” Daphne looped her arm through his and he lowered his head, whispering something.

No, she really didn’t want to know what went on between the two of them. Lorne and Daphne left together, giggling over whatever Lorne had whispered.

Leaving Lettie alone in her apartment, dressed up and unsure. This was dumb; just standing there, waiting, when she knew Chandler was across the hallway.

She went across the hall, but before she could lift her hand Chandler’s door swung open. She froze at the sight of Lettie. She was wearing a leather jacket over a white t-shirt tucked into dark green jeans. Lettie’s eyes couldn’t help but follow the fabric, rounded over the curves of her breasts and smooth across her abdomen.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Chandler smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “You look really nice.”

“Thanks, so do you. I’m sorry about Daphne.”

“No big deal. That’s not even in the top ten worst interactions I’ve had with her. In fact, it might be one of the best. Hope you don’t mind but I think Oak is going to come by. I figured I could use the backup.”

“Oh, that’s fine.” Lettie had always liked Oak. The shifter had moved to Lilac Lake when they were both in elementary school and they had passed summer afternoons by riding bikes around the lake together. Their friendship had petered out as they grew older, but Lettie had always kept a soft spot for them.

“They might be, um…They’re happy I’m back. Thrilled, really. They did not like Gwen when they visited me last year.”

Gwen. The mysterious human woman.
